Renee’ Zempel Chan’s distinctive style of “narrative gesture” depicts the physicality of the human body both inside and out. Through loose contours and abstract symbolism, figuration in Chan’s works bestrides literal and geometrically cadenced, Chan’s paintings replace Realism of form and anatomy with layers of abstract shapes and the most elemental, organic allusions to the body: a hand or footprint; a suggestive curve or softly swelling wave of hair. The deliberate orchestration of her palette serves as a balancing factor against the complex abstration of her imagery. Through bold brush strokes, vivid colors and playfully gestural line work, Chan mimics the patterns and rhythms of the natural world and life-pulse of the individual, creating visual metaphors for “spiritual experiences and personal energies.” In addition tot painting, Chan’s artistic interests involve jewelry making, design and art education. She received her B.F.A. from University of Wisconsin, and has exhibited her work through the Midwest.
